Man dies after car hits embankment

BUFORD — A Hillsboro man died early Sunday in a single-car crash, one mile east of this village in Highland County.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol identified the victim as Courtney McClellan, 24, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim was westbound on Ohio 138 when the 1994 Chevrolet Tracker went off the right side of the road, striking an embankment. The vehicle overturned; the driver was ejected.

Mr. McClellan was not wearing his seat belt, the highway patrol said. The crash remains under investigation.

Ray V. Enfinger of Sycamore Township was arrested late Saturday and charged with vehicular assault and leaving the scene of an accident. Investigators for the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office say he was driving the Camaro that hit and seriously injured Timothy E. Mills, 38, of Hamilton.

Late Sunday, the sheriff's office said its investigation had revealed that Mr. Enfinger had intentionally struck Mr. Mills. Mr. Enfinger was charged with attempted murder.

Mr. Mills was walking along First Avenue in Sycamore Township a little after 5 a.m. when he was hit. He was taken to University Hospital, where he remained in critical condition late Sunday.

Anti-gay activist
burned flag, police say

COLUMBUS — A man with a history of desecrating the gay-pride flag is one of two people charged with burning the banner during a parade.

Police on Saturday charged Charles Spingola, 45, and Thomas Meyer, 47, both of Newark, with open burning, a first-degree misdemeanor punishable by as much as six months in jail.

A state appeals court last week upheld Mr. Spingola's conviction on criminal damaging charges for tearing down a gay-pride flag flying at the Statehouse two years ago at a similar parade.

Police said Mr. Spingola and Mr. Meyer set fire to a rainbow-colored flag they had been carrying as the last marchers in the Columbus Pride Parade passed the Statehouse Saturday.

Deputy facing charges
of forgery, theft

RICHMOND, Ind. — A Wayne County sheriff's deputy has been charged with forgery and theft for allegedly tampering with promotion exams and misusing public funds.

The charges against Michael N. Bossert arose from activity that allegedly took place while he served as chief deputy, the department's second-in-command position.

Mr. Bossert, a 17-year veteran, resigned as chief deputy March 24 and since has been on paid sick and administrative leaves.

Charges filed Friday in Wayne County Circuit Court include four counts of forgery and four counts of theft. The allegations stem from an investigation by Indiana State Police.

The forgery charges allege Mr. Bossert tampered with examinations that help determine police promotions.

The theft charges accuse him of using sheriff's department funds to obtain parts for his personal car and purchase two video cameras that were delivered to his home.

Mr. Bossert did not return immediately a telephone message left Saturday by The Associated Press at his residence in Centerville.

An initial court hearing is set for Wednesday.

Sheriff Jerry Williams said he plans to file charges with the sheriff's merit board and ask that Bossert be fired.
