You Asked For It

Have to live with Ridge Road

By Walt Schaefer
The Cincinnati Enquirer

QUESTION: Ridge Avenue, between Highland Avenue and the Norwood Lateral in Columbia Township, has become increasingly congested. Driving north from the lateral, Ridge narrows to one lane, which often backs up because of motorists turning left into Value City at the traffic light. Also, left-turning drivers exiting Value City often do not proceed to the exit with the light, but pull out, blocking southbound lanes of traffic to make a left turn to go north. Is there a way to evaluate this short stretch for improved traffic flow? Can a turn lane somehow be squeezed in and signalization improved? - Jamie Abele, Pleasant Ridge

ANSWER: “We are still talking four lanes and no room for left-turn slots or widening,” said Tom Langenbrunner of the Hamilton County Engineer's Office. He said engineers considered a no-left-turn arrow at the Value City drive, but that would require a timing change disrupting southbound Ridge traffic, increasing congestion. With no room to widen the road, no effective changes can be made to improve the situation, he said.

        Q. Fourson Drive in Delhi Township is directly across from one of the driveways of Our Lady of Victory School and Church. Turning left off of Fourson can be dangerous, especially when an event is letting out at OLV. Who has the legal right-of-way here? - Marti Gardner, Delhi Township

        A. Mr. Langenbrunner said the intersection is treated as any other. The right-of-way belongs to the motorist who stops first at either Fourson or the OLV driveway.
        Q. Finally, an “Exit Only” sign was placed on Interstate 71 north at the Stewart Road exit. Why isn't there another sign for the I-71 south exit for Red Bank Road? - Beth Agin, Kenwood

        A. Kim Patton, spokeswoman for the Ohio Department of Transportation, said an “Exit Only” sign will be placed at this location within a month.
