Gardner works OT to make U.S. team

        Rulon Gardner, the Greco-Roman heavyweight winner in the 2000 Olympics, and six other Olympians earned spots Sunday at Cintas Center on the U.S. team for the world championships.

        Gardner, of Afton, Wyo., beat Dremiel Byers of Colorado Springs, Colo., 3-0, 3-0 in two overtime bouts in the finals of the World Team Trials at Xavier University.

        In freestyle, Kerry McCoy of Bethlehem, Pa., beat 1999 world champion Stephen Neal of Bakersfield, Calif., 4-3, 1-2, 3-1 in the best-of-three finals at 286 pounds.

        In women's freestyle, Toccara Montgomery, a high school senior from Cleveland, beat 2000 world champion Kristie Marano of Albany, N.Y., at 149.75 pounds.

        Other winners in men's freestyle were Stephen Abas of Fresno, Calif., 119; Eric Guerrero of Stillwater, Okla., 127.75; Bill Zadick of Iowa City, Iowa, 138.75; Chris Bono of Gilbert, Iowa, 152; Joe Williams of Iowa City, Iowa, 167.5; Cael Sanderson of Heber City, Utah, 187.25; and Dominic Black of Colorado Springs, Colo., 213.75.

        Other Greco-Roman winners were Brandon Paulson of Golden Valley, Minn., 119 pounds; James Gruenwald of Colorado Springs, Colo., 127.75; Kevin Bracken of Colorado Springs, Colo., 138.75; Marcel Cooper of Quantico, Va., 152; Keith Sieracki of Colorado Springs, Colo., 167.5; Matt Lindland of Oregon City, Ore., 187.25; and Garrett Lowney of Appleton, Wis., 213.75.
