Bonds watch: No homers

By Greg Beacham
AP Sports Writer

SAN FRANCISCO — Barry Bonds didn't homer for the second straight night, going 0-for-2 with two walks and a run scored as the San Francisco Giants beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-2 Monday night.

Bonds, who is on a record-pace with 39 homers, flied out to shallow right and grounded to shortstop Alex Cora, who was playing on the other side of second base on the Bonds Shift.

The Giants didn't need Bonds' power thanks to Jeff Kent, who went 4-for-4 with a homer and three RBI, and Mark Gardner (4-5), who allowed four hits over seven innings to win his third straight start.

While Bonds gets attention for his remarkable homer binge, Kent — who beat out Bonds for last season's NL MVP award — quietly has picked up his production. With two singles, a double and a solo homer, he improved to 12-for-24 in his last six games.
