Morning Memo

Hot tips and news to start your business day

Today's number: $1,500

Cost for a workplace to bring in the Cuss Control Academy, which offers seminars reminding potty-mouthed people that swearing damages others and fosters negativity.

— The Associated Press

Today's money tip

Don't wait until next spring's tax deadline to make your IRA contribution. Delaying your $2,000 investment until April makes you miss potential investment gains.

But if you can't afford to contribute that much money now, consider making weekly deposits. Spreading your $2,000 allowable contribution across the year would be 52 weekly payments of about $38 each.

Today's career advice

As small businesses get larger — which is the point of marketing — they sometimes adopt structures that resemble big-business role models, according to Barbara Findlay Schenck in Small Business Marketing for Dummies.

“Suddenly customer focus begins to change,” Ms. Schenck says. “Don't let this happen to you.

“Manage your business so that every person in your organization realizes the value of every customer — not only to sales today but to sales tomorrow and well into the future, when the customer's positive comments will lead others to your business.”

— John Eckberg

Today's mover

David A. Sackett has been appointed to director of sales/North America at Chiquita Brands Inc., Process Fruit Ingredient Division. Mr. Sackett will be responsible for all sales and marketing activities in North America, Australia and New Zealand. He was North American sales manager. He has a bachelor's degree in marketing from Indiana University.

Today's Company: Seapine Software

Bug Specialists: This Mason-based company's primary product is TestTrack, a software program that provides bug tracking and incident management.

Staying Simple, Staying Solvent: Seapine was founded in 1995 by now-president Richard Riccetti and his wife, Kelly. From two employees the company has grown to 18. By remaining privately held and letting product sales, not investment, determine growth, firm principals think Seapine will ride out the tech-quakes affecting its industry.

Global Tracking: TestTrack has 100,000 registered users in more than 40 countries. Among Seapine's customers are American Express, Dell Computer, Hewlett Packard, Lockheed Martin, Office Depot and Panasonic.
