Jim Ebel held onto his top position in the Metropolitan Amateur Championship by shooting an even-par 72 in the second round Tuesday. Ebel was the medalist and No.1 seed with a 65 Monday.

“I figured if I shot par I'd be real happy,” Ebel said.

Ebel lost to Jim Volpenhein, this year's No.2 seed, in the second round in 1999 and in the quarterfinals last year. Because of their seeds, the only way they could meet this year would be in the final match.

“We've got a long week ahead of us,” Ebel said. “We each have to play four matches. If I'm there Friday afternoon and he's there, that will be fine.”

BROTHERS: Ebel's brother, Pete, also qualified for match play, as the 16th seed, shooting 149 for the two days. The brothers could meet in the second round Thursday morning if both advance.

The Lykins brothers, Nick and Neil, also qualified for match play. Nick shot 145 over the two days; Neil had 149. The only way the Lykins could meet is in the championship Friday afternoon.

PLAYOFFS: Six players tied at the end of regulation play with two-day totals of 152 for four available match-play spots. Shaun Lasance, Ross Goodson, Graeme McDonic and T.J. Wilson qualified through a playoff. McDonic was the last to make it, beating Robert de Rojas on the fifth hole.
