Bonds Watch: No homers, 1 injury
SAN FRANCISCO Barry Bonds went homerless for the fifth straight game and was listed day-to-day after hurting his hand making a spectacular catch in the Giants' 3-2 win over the Cardinals Friday night.
Bonds robbed rookie Albert Pujols of a potential fifth-inning homer with a leaping catch in left field but hit the wall with his glove hand as he came down.
Bonds dropped to his knees in pain as trainer Stan Conte sprinted from the dugout. Bonds stayed in the game, but held his hand gingerly for the rest of the inning.
X-rays after the game were negative and Bonds was listed as day to day with a bruised right hand.
Bonds and Cardinals slugger Mark McGwire went hitless. Bonds, with 39 homers, is well ahead of McGwire's record pace.
McGwire needs two home runs to match Reggie Jackson for sixth on the career list with 563.
Bonds needs one more to match Jimmie Foxx for 10th at 534. He hit his last homer last Saturday in St. Louis. That was the first time 500-home run hitters appeared in the same game since the Brewers' Hank Aaron and the Indians' Frank Robinson faced each other on Aug. 1, 1976.
Just twice have two 500-homer hitters connected in the same game, both at Candlestick Park, the Giants' former home. San Francisco's Willie Mays and Chicago's Ernie Banks each hit one on June 17, 1970, and Atlanta's Hank Aaron and Mays each hit one on May 8, 1971.
