Tech college awards first associate degrees
HIGHLAND HEIGHTS Northern Kentucky Technical College awarded its first associate degrees in the institution's 60-year history last weekend.
NKTC held its commencement ceremony Saturday. More than 200 students received degrees, diplomas and certificates.
2 Newport school
staff members honored
NEWPORT Newport Independent Schools Superintendent Dan Sullivan was named one of five 2001 Outstanding Superintendents on Fridayby the Kentucky Educational Development Cooperative.
Another Newport staff member was also honored last week.
Garlene Turner, a reading specialist at Mildred Dean Elementary, was named the Rosanne Ginney Teacher of the Year, an annual award given to Newport teacher.
New immunizations required for students
FRANKFORT This fall, school children will be required to get more shots to prevent the spread of disease.
Two new immunization requirements for Kentucky's schools go into effect Aug. 1:
Children between 19 months and 7 years old who attend day care centers, preschools, certified family child care homes, public and private schools must have an additional vaccine against chickenpox.
Students entering sixth grade in public and private schools must have the hepatitis B vaccine.
N.Ky. Head Start accepting applications
Northern Kentucky Head Start is accepting applications for the 2001-2002 school year.
With centers in Covington, Dayton, Elsmere, Falmouth and Newport, Head Start is a free preschool program for low-income families. Children must be 3 or 4 years old on or before Oct. 1 to qualify.
