Train hits car, leaving 5 dead
Northwest Ohio collision under investigation
The Associated Press
MONTPELIER, Ohio Five people were killed when a train hit a car at a rail crossing in this northwest Ohio community late Sunday afternoon, authorities said.
There were no survivors in the car. No one aboard the freight train was injured.
The names and ages of the victims, an adult and four adolescents, were withheld until family members could be contacted, said Lt. Mike Sharp of the Defiance post of the State Highway Patrol.
Their 1993 Buick was struck broadside, burst into flame and was thrown 77 feet, Lt. Sharp said. The train stopped about a quarter-mile down the tracks.
The crossing is marked with signs but no gates or lights, according to Lt. Sharp, who said the train apparently had repeatedly sounded its whistle while approaching the crossing.
He said there was no evident reason why the driver did not see the approaching train.
The bodies were sent to Community Hospitals of Williams County in nearby Bryan for autopsies, the county sheriff's department said.
The cause of the 4:39 p.m. accident was under investigation, according to Rudy Husband, a spokesman for the Norfolk Southern Railroad.
We had a train from Fort Wayne (Ind.) to Detroit strike a car outside of Montpelier, Mr. Husband said.
Mr. Husband said railroad investigators were at the scene collecting information and their report would not be available before today.
The train was carrying 24 loaded truck trailers and one unloaded trailer, Mr. Husband said.
Montpelier is near the state line with Indiana and Michigan, about 50 miles west of Toledo.
