Police shooting called accident

The Associated Press

CLEVELAND — The mayor and police department say evidence shows that the police shooting of a 6-year-old boy was an accident.

Police Chief Martin Flask said Detective Michael Meyer's gun accidentally went off during a confrontation with a suspect wanted in a drug case on June 21.

The bullet grazed the suspect's shoulder, then hit 6-year-old Trevon Williams in the abdomen. The boy was in fair condition Monday at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital.

Mayor Michael R. White said Monday that he understands some people are unhappy with the city's conclusion, but the reviews by police and the coroner confirm the officers' account.

The shooting occurred after a car and foot chase that was prompted by a call to police complaining about illegal drug activity in the area.

Jimmy Nelson, 23, was charged with felony fleeing and eluding, and his cousin Chaz Flonnery, 18, was charged with complicity to the same counts.

Detective Meyer is a 13-year veteran who won the department's medal of honor 10 years ago following a shootout with a gang of robbers.

He was on paid administrative leave but will return to limited duties with the department in a couple of days.
