Major players then and now

        Mayor Charlie Luken:
THEN — No major controversy in sight, respected for his leadership. Former news anchor cruising to coronation as city's first “strong mayor.”
NOW — Center of controversy over riot and aftermath, accused of showing little initial leadership. Faces opposition in mayor's race from another former news anchor.

        Police Chief Tom Streicher:
THEN — Generally praised for deployment of police during riots and aftermath, but under fire from protesters accusing his officers of misconduct.
NOW — Embattled chief under fire from Justice Department lawyers who are investigating accusations of misconduct and discrimination.

        Angela Leisure:
THEN — Grieving mother of Timothy Thomas, the unarmed black man whose shooting by police sparked the riot.
NOW — Calls for calm during the riot, becomes outspoken critic of police division.

        Keith Fangman:
THEN — Brash leader of police union, uncompromising defender of officers. Criticized for controversial public statements.
NOW — Still brash, uncompromising and controversial.

        Rev. Damon Lynch III:
THEN — Civil rights activist, known best for preaching at his Over-the-Rhine church. Often waits in line to address City Council and cable-access TV audience.
NOW — A leader of the commission created to address the city's racial issues. Often juggles interviews with national and international media, from CNN to the BBC.

        City Manager John Shirey:
THEN — Beleaguered city administrator, routinely blamed by City Council for city's problems. Declines to pursue job elsewhere to stay in Cincinnati.
NOW — Blamed by City Council for lack of leadership during riots. Looking for job elsewhere because he will be forced out by council in December.

        Police Officer Stephen Roach:
THEN — Suspended after he shoots Timothy Thomas while chasing him through Over-the-Rhine.
NOW — Faces misdemeanor charges of negligent homicide and obstructing official business.

        Nathaniel Livingston:
THEN — Outspoken critic of police division, uses job as talk show host on WDBZ-AM (1230) to publicize his views.
NOW — Fired from talk show job and jailed for disrupting a speech by Mayor Luken last October.

        Courtis Fuller:
THEN — Channel 5 news anchor, Mayor Luken's former co-worker.
NOW — Charterite candidate for mayor, Mayor Luken's most serious challenger.
