Couple who helped save animals from fire
The Associated Press
FINDLAY, Ohio Two people who spotted a fire at an animal shelter are being credited with helping save more than 100 animals that were inside.
The fire has forced the Hancock County Humane Society to close this week while crews make repairs, but no animals were injured.
The outcome could have been worse if not for an unknown good Samaritan couple, said Suzie Ryan, director of operations for the humane society.
The shelter was closed Saturday, but the couple thought the facility was open. They saw flames and went to a gas station to call for help, Ms. Ryan said. They then returned to the humane society and waited for help to arrive.
We don't know who they are, but we'd like to tell them thank you, Ms. Ryan said.
Damage was estimated at about $45,000. Fire officials said a discarded cigarette started the blaze.
A veterinarian checked the animals after the fire, and the staff was continuing to monitor the animals for possible health problems, Ms. Ryan said.
