Williamstown man dies after tree falls on him
FLORENCE James Campbell of Williamstown was helping clear debris at his mother-in-law's house Sunday night after the first wave of severe storms when a tree fell on him.
Mr. Campbell, 52, was pinned under the tree at the 10 Smith St. residence, police said. When he was extricated from beneath the tree, he went into cardiac arrest and was transported to St. Luke West Hospital by ambulance.
Air Care was unable to fly because of the weather, which included dangerous and cutting winds, heavy rain and lightning.
Mr. Smith was pronounced dead at 7:27 p.m. in the emergency room.
Mr. Smith was an assistant body shop manager at Piles Chevrolet Inc. in Willamstown. He was also a bass guitarist and singer with Smokin' Country, a band that played every other Saturday at Goforth Community Center.
He is survived by his wife, Lynda Louden Campbell of Williamstown; a son, Jayme H. Campbell of Williamstown; two daughters, Sheilah Rae Campbell of Williamstown and Angela Kay Campbell of Corinth; and three grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home in Williamstown. Visitation will be held after 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Bellview Baptist Cemetery in Burlington.
