SPARTA, Ky. — Heavy favorite Frank Kimmel won Friday night's ARCA race at Kentucky Speedway, then surprised the crowd of 24,740 with some “Spiderman” fence-climbing akin to Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves.

Kimmel, the reigning ARCA season champion and 2001 points leader, won from the pole despite tire problems. He dropped back a bit during the middle stages of the race, but regained the lead when he changed tires.

The 39-year-old Kimmel, from Jeffersonville, Ind., jumped out of his car at the start-finish line and climbed the fence afterward, mim icking Castroneves' joyous leap at the Indy 500 in May.

Willie Green of Walton, Ky., who started in the No.7 spot, was leading the race at the halfway point (lap 68) but finished 20th because of an accident.

Green and Jerry Glanville, the former NFL coach who occasionally drives ARCA, tangled on lap 93 of the 134-lap race. Both cars spun and crashed into the wall entering Turn Two, and both suffered extensive rear-end damage. Neither driver was hurt.

Jeep Pflum of Cincinnati, the area's other local entrant, finished eighth. Pflum, representing Rite Track Racing out of West Chester, started in the 12th position.
