Going out

        Riverside: It's all Russia all the time when the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra hauls out the biiig percussion and a couple zillion quivering strings for a nightful of music from Russian masters. Leonidas Kavakos is guest violinist, taking cues from conductor John Morris Russell. 8:30 p.m. today, Riverbend Music Center, $17-$32. 381-3300.

        Chilling out: Just the thing after a long day juggling heaven only knows what at work: LaRosa's Party in the Park serves up music from Glide, featuring Matt DeCoster, a slab of pizza and a cold beer right there on the banks of the river. 5:30-10:30 p.m. today,Yeatman's Cove, Sawyer Point. 579-3191.

        Guided tour: John Wilson, consulting curator of paintings and sculpture, leads a gallery walk through Modern Masters: From Corot to Kandinsky, giving insight and sharing thoughts on modern art from mid-19th to mid-20th centuries during an Artful Afternoon. 12:10-12:50 p.m. today, Taft Museum of Art, 316 Pike St., downtown, free, reservation required. 241-0343.

Staying In

        TV picks: PBS offers an excellent summer history lesson with the Roman Empire in the First Century, a four-hour, two-week series, 8-10 p.m. today and next Wednesday, Channels 48, 54, 16.

        • TV Critic John Kiesewetter also says Brady Bunch fans will enjoy the “Pop-up Video” notations on the 9 p.m. (Nick at Nite) episodes today through Aug. 29.

The Goods

        CD picks: Romeo Must Die star Aaliyah gets back to her music on Aaliyah (Virgin; $18.98 CD, $12.98 cassette).

        • Rapper Foxy Brown's been quiet for the past couple of years, a condition that ends this week with Broken Silence (Def Jam; $18.98 CD, $12.98 cassette).

        • The classic-rock/Americana reissue of the year arrives this week with Buffalo Springfield's Box Set (Rhino; $59.98 CDs only), a four-disc collection compiled by Neil Young, a founder of the group that included Steve Stills, Richie Furay, Jim Messina and other future rock stars. The set includes 36 previously unreleased demos and mixes and an illustrated history of the seminal folk/country/rock band.

Planning Ahead

        24 hours out: Snakes and more snakes take center stage along with crafts, stories, hikes and more animals at Rentschler Forest Preserve's Lollipop Program. 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Indian Meadows Drive, Fairfield Township, Butler County, $1.50, ages 3-5. 867-5835.

        72 hours 'til Saturday: It's a biggie, complete with the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, F-86 Sabre/MiG-15 Dogfight, Jimmy Franklin with the world's only jet-assisted Waco Wingwalking Act and tons more.
