Fruit stories

Asian pears are native to China and Japan and grown extensively in the United States. Also known as Chinese or sand pears, Asian pears are apple-size and almost perfectly round with speckled yellow or green skin. The white flesh is firm, crisp and juicy — like an apple — with a sweet flavor somewhat like a pear. Asian pears can be sliced extremely thin without tearing and used as a garnish. Good in salads, and also stewed and slightly chilled. Choose Asian pears that are fragrant and free from blemishes. Store at room temperature until ripe; refrigerate when ripe.

Bell's Oberon ($8.99 per 6-pack): This seasonal specialty (only available May-September) from Kalamazoo, Mich., is one of the few American wheat beers worth searching for. More body than most, and the superb quality associated with the entire Bell's line.
