Here's the dirt: bike track may be coming
If land is provided, grant defrays costs

LEBANON One of the nation's fastest-growing youth sports might be headed to Warren County.
Lebanon's Parks and Recreation Department has received a grant for a BMX or bicycle motocross track, Director Bob Harris announced Tuesday.
All the city has to supply is land for the track and parking, and 4,000 yards of dirt, Mr. Harris said.
The American Bicycle Association would design, build and landscape the track a $10,000 value if the city decides to go ahead with the project, he said.
It gives kids something to do,said Jim Sowder, president of Fort Hamilton BMX, which runs a BMX track in Butler County. If they don't have anything to do they'll get in trouble, sometimes.
The main problem he has is keeping the track in good condition. When races aren't scheduled, and some kids unknowingly damage the track by using it when it's wet.
Hamilton's BMX track is the oldest in Ohio, dating to 1978, he said, and Cleves recently built one. Both are part of the National Bicycle League, ABA's competition.
The city's McClure Road sports complex is Mr. Harris' first choice for the track, but parking could be a problem there, he said.
BMX racing has begun to catch on nationwide, said John David, director of new track development at ABA. The group has finished 30 tracks this year.
ABA and the National Bicycle League's memberships total about 90,000, he said.
