The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center will host public meetings Mondayand Tuesday in Maysville and Germantown to discuss the museum's research on a suspected slave jail near Germantown.
The meetings will include a presentation of archaeological work at the jail site, as well as a discussion of the role of oral history in telling the story about the jail.
We are extremely excited about reaching out to and engaging the community of Northern Kentucky, said Dr. Orloff Miller, director of the Freedom Center's Research Institute.
We encourage everyone to express themselves because it is our hope that these gatherings will offer an opportunity to learn from the community.
The Freedom Center has been involved in researching and preserving the Germantown structure since 1999.
The meetings are in conjunction with the Kentucky Heritage Council, the Maysville Public Library and Buckhanan Station Restaurant.
Monday's meeting will be at the Maysville Public Library, 218 E. Third St., at 6 p.m.
Tuesday's meeting will be at Germantown's Buckhanan Station Restaurant, 4395 Ky. 10, at 7 p.m.
The Freedom Center, designed to celebrate the courage and cooperation of the Underground Railroad, is scheduled to open on Cincinnati's riverfront in 2004.
