Boyfriend charged in tot's death

Police say he admitted hurting 3-year-old boy

By Gregory Korte
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Nicole Younger called 911 in a panic Thursday because her 3-year-old son wasn't breathing.

Eight hours later, after the boy was pronounced dead, Ms. Younger's boyfriend admitted that he had hurt the youngster, police say.

Timothy N. Akemon, 26, who lives with Ms. Younger in Avondale, is in the Hamilton County Justice Center facing murder and felonious assault charges.

“I just went to check on my son. He was sleeping. He ain't breathing,” Ms. Younger told a police dispatcher at 6:51 p.m.

A moment later: “Oh, my God,” and the call was disconnected.

Paramedics were unable to revive Darian, and he was pronounced dead at Children's Hospital Medical Center at 7:12 p.m. He would have celebrated hisfourth birthday Aug. 18.

A neighbor, Theresa Lounds, said she came home from the grocery and saw the commotion at the small, one-story house at 548 Camden Ave. Several neighbors were trying to resuscitate the boy. Mr. Akemon seemed panicked, along with everyone else, she said.

“I think this must have been a mishap of some kind,” said Ms. Lounds, who described Darian as a happy and outgoing boy.

Mr. Akemon had four children of his own, she said. “You should see him with his children. I just don't get it.”

The Hamilton County coroner's office conducted an autopsy Friday but wouldn't release the cause of death. Mr. Akemon also lived with his mother and sister in the Camden Avenue home. He is scheduled to stand trial next month on a 1999 domestic violence charge in which he is accused of punching his sister several times and biting her hand during a fight over her car.
Timothy N. Akemon, 26, lived with the child's mother in Avondale.
