Campbell buses get nicer digs
Site offers more space, security

ALEXANDRIA For more space and extra security, Campbell County Schools is buying nearly 4 acres on U.S. 27 for a new bus garage.
The district is buying the property at 4500 Alexandria Pike, including a large garage, from Bray Enterprises for $675,000.
The school board earlier this week approved the sale, which is expected to be finalized by October.
The site is the current home of Kenny's Collision Center, a repair shop for large trucks. The business is moving to a new location on AA Highway in Alexandria after the state took part of its property for the widening of U.S. 27.
But the remaining 3.8 acres is enough to house the school district's 80 transportation employees and 65 buses, said Transportation Director Mike Dawson.
The collision center's garage is twice as large as the district's current garage behind Campbell County Middle School, he said.
As buses have grown over the years, our garage has not, Mr. Dawson said. They barely fit in there.
The new site will also ease traffic congestion, Mr. Dawson said. Buses now have to navigate around traffic at the middle school and nearby Alexandria Elementary.
The property also has a security feature that its current site does not: a fence.
School buses were hit by vandals just before school let out in late May. Tire valve stems were damaged on 80 buses, forcing school officials to cancel classes for a day.
