Oldest active federal judge, 95, to retire Aug. 31
The Associated Press
COLUMBUS The oldest U.S. district judge still handling cases will retire Aug. 31 after 35 years on the bench.
A recent bout with pneumonia and a loss of stamina helped convince U.S. District Judge Joseph P. Kinneary he should step down.
Today, I feel real good, the 95-year-old said in an interview with the Columbus Dispatch for a story Friday. But I'm on a slow slide. It's time to retire.
Judge Kinneary was sworn in as a federal judge in 1966, and accepted senior status in December 1987, which reduced his docket by 20 percent. He is the oldest active federal judge, said Dick Carelli, federal courts spokesman.
Judge Kinneary, a Cincinnati native, said the highlight of his career came Sept. 18, 1998, when the five-story federal courthouse in Columbus was renamed the Kinneary U.S. Courthouse.
