4 historic buildings lost to fire
The Associated Press
GALLIPOLIS, Ohio A fire that destroyed four historical buildings in the downtown business district of this Ohio River city was still smoldering Sunday.
The fire, two blocks south of City Hall, started about 5 p.m. Saturday and destroyed a clothing store, a clothes imprinting shop, a sporting goods store and an insurance building.
Stephen Wilson, 911 director for Gallia County, said authorities believe the fire started at the Haskins-Tanner Clothiers and spread north to adjacent buildings.
Officials believe electrical problems caused the fire, said Larry Boyer, a city emergency medical worker. Damage estimates were unknown Sunday.
Two firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation at Holzer Medical Center and released. A third was transported to Cabell-Huntington Medical Center in Huntington, W.Va., and was expected to be released shortly. Information on his type of injury was not available Sunday.
Regina Adkins, 49, has lived in Gallipolis all her life and said she was shocked when she heard about the fire.
Mr. Boyer said several of the 22 mostly brick and stone buildings on the block are on the National Register of Historic Places.
