Sampras, Safin play today

        MASON — Around 1 p.m. today, three Grand Slam champions will be competing at the same time at the Tennis Masters Series Cincinnati.

        • Pete Sampras, winner of 13 Slams, will take center court to face Nicolas Lapentti;

        • 2000 U.S. Open winner Marat Safin will be playing next door on the Grandstand Court against Guillermo Canas;

        • Yevgeny Kafelnikov, who won the 1999 Australian Open and 1996 French Open, will be on Court 3 against Andreas Vinciguerra.

        Cincinnati's defending champion Thomas Enqvist plays Nicolas Kiefer at 11 a.m. on Stadium Court, and Patrick Rafter-Albert Portas follows Sampras.

        Boris Becker, playing his first ATP Tour event since 1999, competes in doubles with Goran Ivanisevic.

        “Once the ball is (hit) towards me, I'm OK,” Becker said, smiling. “The problem is when I have to go left and right.”

        Monday, the lone upset was 22-year-old Argentinian Gaston Gaudio bouncing No. 2 seed Andre Agassi 6-4, 7-6 (3).
