MASON Thomas Enqvist is having a decent year against players not named Nicolas Kiefer. Unfortunately, he keeps running into Kiefer.
As he did last week in Montreal, Enqvist drew Kiefer in the first round and lost in straight sets this time 6-4, 6-0. It was his third loss to Kiefer this year.
In this kind of field, it's tough matches no matter who you are playing, Enqvist said. Of course, some players suit you better than others.
The 11th-seeded Enqvist became the first defending champion to lose in the first round since Andre Agassi fell to Gustavo Kuerten 6-3, 6-1 in 1997. But that year, Agassi came in unseeded and Kuerten was 10th. In the Open era, no other defending champion of this event has lost in the first round.
TRIPPED UP: Goran Ivanisevic had an unusual equipment delay in his doubles match with Boris Becker, a match which the duo lost to Todd Woodbridge and Jonas Bjorkman. Ivanisevic threw his shoes in a courtside trash can after the third game of the match, which was delayed eight minutes while a ballboy got him a new pair.
Part of the shoe just snapped, Ivanisevic said.
JENSENS LOSE: Luke and Murphy Jensen lost their first-round match but sure made it interesting. Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi, the seventh-ranked doubles team in the world, won 6-7, 6-0, 6-1.
But the first set lasted 62 minutes. The Jensens blew 10 set points before winning the tiebreaker 7-3.
