Hair is on woman's minds

By Joy Kraft
The Cincinnati Enquirer

You have to have priorities. Women think about their hair as much as they think about sex — about 43 minutes a day, according to a nationwide survey for Salon Selectives by Yankelovich Partners of Chicago.

More than 100 women, 18-28, were interviewed by phone for the survey “conducted to gather information on issues and challenges facing women.” More findings:

        • In the car: 92 percent say they eat; 75 percent fix their hair; 72 percent talk on cell phones and 38 percent have sex.

        • One in five women , 20 percent, style their hair naked or in bra and panties.

        • One in three, 32 percent, think their hair is their sexiest feature.

        • Two in five, 40 percent, have changed their hairstyle to please their men.

        • Two in five wish they had someone else's hair.

        • One in 10, 10 percent, would give up their man, a great sex life, wealth or a perfect body for eternally perfect hair.

        • Julia Roberts has the best hair in Hollywood, according to 41 percent.

Salon Selectives makes ThermaSilk and Finesse and is a Helene Curtis brand owned by Unilever.

Chistina Perrin, fashion designer with Cincinnati roots, is featured in the August issue of InStyle magazine in a story about star's gowns, including Charlize Theron, Halle Berry and Leelee Sobieski. Ms. Perrin likes designing for stars because they have “good bodies, so that's fun — exposing flesh and helping someone make the most of her sex appeal.” Her clothes, known for their beading, ruffles and pastel leathers, are for “people who would have no qualms about wearing an evening gown during the day,” quotes the magazine. And, Ms. Perrin admits she's done just that on a trip to the flower market. “I figured: I can, I'm in the mood, so why not?”

Back-to-school: Kids R Us will trot out back-to-school looks for girls and boys ages 2-12 10 a.m. Saturday at Toys R Us, 7800 Montgomery Road. Look for lots of sparkle and glam glitter for girls and layering, hoods and lots of pockets for boys.

School cuts: Participating Great Clips is teaming with JumpStart educational software to offer free CD games to kids receiving back-to-school haircuts during August and September. The CD-ROM contains two games, JumpStart Music for 5- to 8-year-olds and Spy Masters Training Mission for 7- to 11-year-olds.

Birthday thong song: Fredericks's stores are celebrating the 20th anniversary of the thong in August by giving away 100,000 limited-edition commemorative thongs with a $20 purchase, while supplies last. In 1981, according to Frederick's, thong sales reresented 5 percent of overall panty sales; today it's 90 percent. Frederick's sells more than 75,000 thongs a week. Frederick's stores are at Forest Fair and Northgate malls.

Super eyelash curler: Tweezerman makes an eyelash curler with a curling pad that can be heated with a blow dryer for a stronger lash curl. The Super Curl Eyelash Curler is made of clear plastic to make it easier to see what you're doing. $5.50 with $2 refill pads. At Walgreen, Trade Secrets and Sally Beauty stores.

We tried it: Though almost every mascara on the shelf boasts that it is non-clumping, few keep the promise after the first application. We tried Almay Amazing Lash Mascara (about $5 at Target) and it lived up to its “won't smudge off” promise. Contact wearers will like knowing it's hypo-allergenic as well. Available in black and brown.

Breast cancer awareness bra: Wacoal has launched an Awareness Bra Collection of three bras in four colors with coordinating panties as a health reminder for women to perform monthly breast examinations. For every bra sold during October, Breast Cancer Awareness month, Wacoal will donate $1 to the Komen Foundation. The Awareness bras carry a breast cancer awareness pink ribbon logo and have hang tags with “how-tos” of self breast exams, plus the number of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundations Helpline. Wacoal bras are carried by Dillard's, Saks Fifth Avenue and Parisian.
