Fund-raisers offer fine fireworks views

By Maxine Berkman

You still have time to tap a date worthy of the day-long Third Federal Riverfest 2001 and the Toyota-WEBN Fireworks at 9:05 p.m, Sept 2. Rozzi Famous Fireworks will launch cascades of colors across the Ohio River, and Greater Cincinnati fund-raisers will try to coax you to their venues with a view. Take your pick:

        • Expect a New Year's Eve-kind of glamour at Sparkle, the Greater Cincinnati Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's (CFF) star-spangled spot on the river. Sparkle will shine 5-11 p.m. at the Chart House Restaurant, 405 Riverboat Row, Newport.

Guests can linger at a buffet, play games of chance, express their wows at magicians' tricks, dance to the music of Act I and bid on silent auction items, such as gourmet cooking classes.

Co-chairs: Bill Kelleher and Cindy Lowe.

Cost: $150 (includes parking passes and reserved seating). Reservations limited to 250: 533-9300. Sponsors: Jake Sweeney BMW and the BMW Store

        • Ribs and Riverfest Extravaganza 2001, the Wellness Community, Greater Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky's (TWC) shooting star, will sky-rocket at 6 p.m. at the Gregory Centre at the Montgomery Inn Banquet and Conference Facility, 601 E. Pete Rose Way, downtown.

A limit of 300 barbecue aficionados will nibble hors d'oeuvres and then don bibs for classic Montgomery Inn bounty.

Guests can stroll along the riverfront and youngsters can play games and decorate their faces with paint.

        Cost: $150, $75 ages 13 and under. Reservations: 791-4060.

        Sponsors: Miller Valentine Group.

        • The Dan Beard Council of the Boy Scouts of America's 11th annual Festival of Fireworks will run 5:30-10 p.m. at the Incline Landing in the parking lot between Highland Towers and Rookwood Pottery Restaurant, 1071 Celestial St., Mount Adams.

The Celestial Restaurant will set adult taste buds atingle and their offspring, ages 12 and under, will revel in camp fare.

Junior attractions: carnival games, scout skill demonstrations, magicians and face painting.

Scout promise: Reserved parking and shuttle service.

        Cost: $130, $25 children 12 and under. Reservations limited to 500: 961-2336.

        Chairman: John Farrenkopf.

        Sponsor: Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky Toyota Dealers.

        • Friends of the Children's Home of Northern Kentucky (CHNK) can pack lawn chairs, blankets, children and neighbors and establish an enclave in a pastoral setting at the fifth annual Fireworks Festival, beginning 6 p.m. at the CHNK campus in Covington's Devou Park.

Attractions: organized games, crafts, picnic fare, a recorded sound track and free parking.

        Cost: $15, $5 children. Reservations limited to 600: (859) 261-8768, Ext. 3070. Aug. 31.

        • “River Bash 2001” will offer a view of the fireworks and Cincinnati skyline enhanced with food from Newport Hooters and Remington Riverboat restaurants and the appearances of local sports personalities from 3 p.m. on the Newport Barge, 301 Riverboat Row.

Sports guest: University of Cincinnati basketball coach Bob Huggins.

Cost: $80 (includes buffet and two drink tickets), $100 window seating and $125 outdoor riverside seating. Reservations limited to 800 (621-8988).

River Bash will benefit Athletes Reach Out (ARO), a group of professional athletes and members of the sports community who raise money for community development.

        • Pyrotechnical pundits can mark time until Rozzi's razzle-dazzle at the Rubber Duck Regatta, a FreeStore-FoodBank fund-raiser at 3 p.m. at the Serpentine Wall, downtown.

Now through August, 70,000 rubber ducks in sassy shades will be adopted at $5 per quacker ($25 for six). Contenders will be tagged with serial numbers. Race day, ducks will be launched from the L&N Bridge and float to the Suspension Bridge. Owner of the first-place duck will drive home in a new Toyota Roxy ECHO. If the winning number matches a preselected number, the lucky duck will generate an additional $1 million from Provident Bank. Additional prizes: five $1,000 U.S. savings bonds from Provident Bank and a round-trip ticket for two to anywhere in the United States on Delta Air Lines from AAA Insurance.

WLW-AM's Jim Scott will be the 2001 Rubber Duck emcee..

        Information: 929-3825.
