Teen may face charges over crash

Two passengers hospitalized

By Janice Morse
The Cincinnati Enquirer

FAIRFIELD TWP. — As two teen passengers remained hospitalized, charges were being considered Tuesday against an 18-year-old driver accused of running through a stop sign andcausing a crash, authorities said.

Edward Gosmeyer, 15, was listed in critical condition at Children's Hospital Medical Center.

Casey Calvo, 17, was listed in serious condition at University Hospital.

Both teen-agers were hurt in a Monday evening crash at Morris and Princeton roads.

They were passengers in a 1990 Honda Civic driven by a Fairfield-area teen, Scott W. Erdman, who suffered minor injuries in the wreck, said Fairfield Township Police Chief Richard St. John.

Mr. Erdman attended Fairfield High School; his passengers' schools and addresses were unavailable Tuesday.

The crash follows an Ohio Department of Public Safety report showing that Butler County ranked worst among Ohio's 88 counties for crashes involving teen drivers.

Mr. Erdman's vehicle, northbound on Morris, did not stop at a stop sign, the chief said, and a 2000 Ford pickup struck the passenger side of the Honda, trapping Mr. Erdman's passengers.

The Ford's driver, Christy Templeton, 26, and her 4-year-old daughter, Katelyn, were treated at Fort Hamilton Hospital.

They appeared to have suffered only minor injuries even though their vehicle slid on its side and its air bags did not deploy, Chief St. John said.

Chief St. John said he expected Mr. Erdman would face charges as a result of the crash.

Neighbors told reporters they considered the intersection accident-prone because drivers mistake its two-way stop for a four-way stop.

Police records show eight crashes there this year, half with injuries.

The chief said the cause of Monday's collision remained under investigation.

He added, “I think in both cases here, we're dealing with people who are familiar with the area.

“Our understanding is that Mr. Erdman frequently traveled that road and should know there was a stop sign there.”

David Eck and Sue Kiesewetter contributed to this report.
