Smart Mouth

Just In

        • At the Ohio State Fair: The Emily Lewis pie dynasty continues. The Montgomery woman brought home a first-place award for her cherry pie, third place for her peach and a “best of show” ribbon in the fruit pie category for her pineapple pie. Ms. Lewis has won six Best of Show pie awards in 11 years at the Ohio State Fair, and last year she won a blue ribbon at the National Pie Championships. She plans to compete again at the national contest, held in Florida in February.

        • At grocery stores: Wash the summer away with new Chai Spice Tea, made by Cincinnati's Tradewinds Beverage Co. The Indian-style chai tea is kettle-brewed and flavored with cinnamon, licorice, ginger, clove and other spices. The chai and eight other Tradewinds tea flavors are available at groceries and convenience stores. About 99 cents per 16-ounce bottle.

Market Scan

African slaves brought okra to the American South, where the green pods still are popular fried, steamed and as an essential ingredient in gumbo. Look for firm, brightly colored pods less than 4 inches long. Refrigerate okra in a plastic bag up to three days.

Sip It

Sutter Home 2000 Chardonnay “California” ($7): It's difficult to set aside a personal preference for drier wines, but this chard has too much going for it to be ignored: nice acidity, forward fruit, wide availability (nearly 2 million cases) and more than reasonable price. If you like a touch of sweetness, here's a chardonnay for your everyday white wine.
