Ky. man shoots wife, kills self
The Associated Press
LOUISVILLE A Jefferson County man shot and killed himself Friday night after a standoff with police that started when he shot his wife about seven hours earlier.
The initial shooting occurred about 3:30 p.m. in the Iroquois Park neighborhood in the southwestern part of the county. An anonymous caller reported the shooting to the county's 911 dispatch center.
Just before 6 p.m., county police officers entered the home and removed the wounded woman from a front room, said police spokesman Officer Robert Biven.
She was taken to University of Louisville Hospital and was in critical condition Friday night, Officer Biven said.
He said hostage negotiators talked to the man, identified only as a 47-year-old, for several hours.
Once it became dark we decided to deploy some tear gas into the house, hoping he might come out peacefully, Officer Biven said. Unfortunately, he decided to shoot himself.
The man was transported to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead, Officer Biven said.
Police have not released the names of the man or woman.
Officer Biven said the couple had a son and a daughter. Neither was at the home at the time of the shooting, but the son came home later, Officer Biven said.
