Outplayed, outhustled and outsmarted during the first half, the Turpin boys soccer team rallied for four goals in the second half to beat Fairfield 4-2 Tuesday night at Fairfield Soccer Stadium.
We may have been a little overconfident in the first half and they took it to us, senior striker Matt Quinn said.
Coach (John Basalyga) told us at halftime that we worked too hard during the offseason and in practice to play like this. We came out the second half and played harder. This takes the weight off our backs.
It was Quinn who got the Spartans going, scoring an unassisted goal 5:10 into the second half. Senior Danny Matteucci followed with goals at the 30:36 and 23:16 marks to put it away.
This was a typical first game in that you never know what to expect, Basalyga said. We were getting beat in the middle of the field and we made several changes at halftime.
Those changes included moving Matteucci and Wes Ernst from defense to midfield. Matteucci then scored the tying and winning goals.
Marc Burch, who scored a Cincinnati-best 39 goals last season, tallied the final goal and assisted on the other three.
We lost six players, three who were starters, and a lot of the guys realized we may not be that good this year, Burch said. Everyone seemed nervous the first half, and I told them all we needed to do was go out and play.
The first half was all Fairfield.
The Indians offense attacked the Spartans throughout the first 40 minutes as Nick Carovillano scored the first goal less than five minutes into the game off a centering pass from Davey Botos.
Carovillano added another goal on a header off a pass from John White.
Anderson 2, LaSalle 1 Sophomore striker Danny Impellizzeri scored twice to lead Anderson past No.5 La Salle.
Taylor 1, Indian Hill 0 Senior Ryan Hoffman scored on a breakaway with six minutes remaining as the Yellowjackets beat No.2 Indian Hill. Junior goalie Rob Andres saved 27 shots.
