Hot tips and news to start your business day
Today's Number: 500,000 - Drivers talking on hand-held cell phones at any time during the day, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimated.
Today's Money Tip: Mortgages come in two categories: fixed rate and adjustable. With a fixed-rate mortgage, the interest rate does not change over the life of the loan. This makes the most sense for those who plan to stay put in their home for a long time. You pay a little more in interest, but it is stretched over a longer period. With an adjustable-rate loan, you pay according to a set formula as interest rates fluctuate on the open market. Lenders charge a lower rate for such loans because you are taking on some of the interest-rate risk. If interest rates rise, your payments could far exceed what you expected.
Today's Career Advice: When procrastinating, nothing is as harmful as not acting at all, says author Peg Pickering in How to Make the Most of Your Workday. First, identify the problem; then look at the options; and finally, act.
Many people approach decision-making this way: "If I can't be assured my decision is completely right, I'm not going to act,' Ms. Pickering says.
Delaying action becomes a habit, and a destructive one at that.
