St. Ursula gains revenge on Fairfield
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Junior midfielder Becca Bullard scored her first varsity goal and sophomore goalkeeper Emily Barnes made it stand up with eight saves, giving fourth-ranked St. Ursula a 1-0 victory over No.3 Fairfield in girls soccer action at St. Ursula.
Bullard scored just less than nine minutes into the game on a corner kick. St. Ursula gained a measure of revenge for its loss last year to Fairfield in the Division I district final in a game decided by penalty kicks.
It seems like every time we play Fairfield, it's 1-0, St. Ursula coach Steve Dorr said.
Mariemont 1, Wyoming 1 Striker Ashley McCracken scored from 5 yards out with a minute left to give Mariemont, the No.3 team in the Enquirer's Division II-III coaches poll, a tie with No.5 Wyoming in the Cincinnati Hills League opener for both teams.
The game was scoreless until sophomore striker Desiree Morris scored for the Cowboys with 13 minutes left in the game.
Mariemont also tied No.4 Cincinnati Country Day in its opener Monday. Wyoming has beaten CCD.
McAuley 2, Alter 1 Junior forward Nikki Lillis and junior midfielder Tabbitha Fixmer scored for the Mohawks, ranked fifth in Division I.
Seton 1, Walnut Hills 0 Junior Alexx Kwaitkowski scored off a centering pass from Emily Tepe 10 minutes into the game, giving the second-ranked Saints the victory at Saylor Park.
Our defense was solid, coach Dan Donovan said. We have a sophomore sweeper (Karin Martini) who played well in her first varsity game with our returning backs.
Anderson 2, Northwest 0 The Redskins scored both goals during the final eight minutes.
The go-ahead score game-winner was by Kym Rosser, who took a centering pass from Katie Jo Yulland.
We lost the first game to Fairfield 2-1, and tonight should be a confidence builder for the girls, Anderson coach Jim Calder said.
Lakota West 4, Ursuline 0 Lauren Podvin and Stephanie Comisar each scored a goal and added an assist to lead the eighth-ranked Firebirds.
Glen Este 3, Harrison 0 Samantha Riley and Laurel Chalk, the Trojans' leading scorers last year, combined for three goals in the first half.
