CovCath renews old soccer series
The Cincinnati Enquirer
The last time Covington Catholic and St. Xavier played a soccer game, the Colonels were a young program searching for respect.
Celebrating its 25th year of soccer, Covington Catholic met the Bombers on Thursday for the first time since 1980, and the result was a 1-1 tie.
St.Xavier won the previous two meetings (1979, 1980) convincingly.
St. Xavier struck first Thursday with 14:29 remaining in the game, when Kevin Greudesser dribbled across the top of the box and fired a shot into the corner.
The Colonels evened the score with 3:30 remaining when Andy Conrad scored on a direct kick just outside the penalty box.
We're starting with a two-year contract with St. Xavier, but we hope the series will continue indefinitely, 23rd-year CovCath coach John Horton said. We've had Elder, LaSalle and Moeller on our schedule for the last several years. We like playing the GCL schools.
Covington Catholic is wearing silver jerseys to celebrate its 25th anniversary. But it has had little success in the new uniforms; it is off to an 0-2-1 start.
