Covington will pick chief from within
Both assistants are well qualified, mayor says
By Jim Hannah
The Cincinnati Enquirer
COVINGTON Mayor Butch Callery said city officials will choose a replacement for outgoing Chief Al Bosse from the two current assistant chiefs Lt. Cols. Jim Liles and Thomas Schonecker.
Why go outside when we have qualified people inside? Mr. Callery asked. Both assistant chiefs are pretty equal in their qualifications. I don't think we can go wrong with either one.
Lt. Col. Liles, 54, named assistant chief in January, is a 25-year veteran of the department. As services commander, his duties include overseeing budgeting and administration, the commu nity relations program and serving as night captain. He is also the department's media spokesman.
Lt. Col. Schonecker, 55, assistant chief since 1999, is a 31-year veteran of the department. As operations commander, he oversees the patrol bureau, crime bureau, crime suppression unit and impound lot.
Mr. Callery said the city commission plans to accept Chief Bosse's formal resignation at its Tuesday meeting. Because he does not know how much vacation time Chief Bosse has accumulated, he could not say when the chief's last day would be. Chief Bosse, 55, decided to retire after six years as chief and 34 years on the Covington force.
The new chief, Mr. Callery said, would determine whether there was a continued need for two assistant police chiefs.
An interview date for the candidates has not been set. Mr. Callery said the commission, city manager and assistant city manager would be given about an hour to interview each candidate.
Mr. Callery expects the commission to make a decision before the end of September.
Officials will not say what the new chief will be paid, but Chief Bosse's annual base salary is $69,248.
The new chief will lead Northern Kentucky's largest police force.
