Hamilton coaches resign after suspected hazing
By Janice Morse
The Cincinnati Enquirer
HAMILTON Two coaches have resigned, and Hamilton High's boys soccer games have been suspended indefinitely following a suspected hazing incident, school officials said Friday.
School officials released few details about the incident, which occurred Wednesday at Mark Avenue Field, but Joni Copas, spokeswoman for the city schools, said it might have involved some players having their hands tied behind their backs.
Varsity Coach Kim Vieira and Heather Fenton, assistant varsity coach, both submitted letters of resignation to Athletic Director John Ross. Attempts to obtain copies of the letters were unsuccessful.
Mr. Ross, Mr. Vieira and Ms. Fenton could not be reached for comment.
No one needed medical treatment, and no police re port was filed, Ms. Copas said.
On Friday, administrators were beginning the search for new coaches and were still questioning members of the boys' varsity and junior varsity teams about the incident. About 35 boys, in grades 9-12, participate on the teams.
They're all being interviewed, Ms. Copas said.
The alleged hazing surfaced because a parent called the athletic director and left a voice-mail message. She was concerned and rightfully so, Ms. Copas said. This kind of conduct will not be tolerated.
Upon receiving the par ent's message, school officials immediately began an investigation, Ms. Copas said. She did not have the name of the parent who reported the incident, but said, It's my understanding that the mother appreciated the quick response.
