Police well-acquainted with teen-ager
By Jane Prendergast
The Cincinnati Enquirer
In this summer maze of crime connectedness, the same suspect often turned up in several violent incidents. Example: Stetson Burdine, age 18.
On Tuesday, he was indicted on 10 counts in July and August incidents that included shooting wildly at a van carrying a couple and their 1-year-old child in Cumminsville on Aug. 13.
But police say Mr. Burdine's string of crimes started April 12, the last day of the riots. He was caught at 2:45 a.m. coming out of L&S Market on Mercer Street in Over-the-Rhine. The store had been closed since 8 p.m., when the citywide curfew kicked in.
Officers said they watched Mr. Burdine walk out with incense sticks. He was later arrested. He pleaded guilty May 11 to one count of breaking and entering. He was ordered June 11 to spend two years on probation, perform community service, and get a job and his general equivalency diploma.
How hard is that? asks Hamilton County Prosecutor Mike Allen.
Instead, police say, Mr. Burdine continued his crime spree. He now is charged with felonious assault and aggravated menacing in three shootings in three weeks.
Police arrested Mr. Burdine on Aug. 16 after they say he fired a rifle through a wall, hitting a neighbor next door. They found him hiding in a closet, and found a rifle, 12-gauge shotgun, revolver and pistol in the house.
On July 25, he was accused of firing a gun into the air after threatening a neighbor in English Woods. He was found guilty this week of improperly discharging a firearm.
I'll say one thing for him, Officer Eric Carpenter said. He sure knew how to get ahold of guns.
The teen could be sent to prison until he's past 55.
