Ohio-bred wins Bassinet Stakes
Request for Parole favorite in Monday's Cradle at RD
Ohio-bred Joanies Bella, ridden by Craig Perret, posted a mild upset in the $100,000 Pepsi Bassinet Stakes for 2-year-old fillies Saturday at River Downs.
Joanies Bella ($6.80 win mutuel) caught pacesetter Jamac's Prospect after a half-mile and then held off a late charge by favored Lakeside Cup to win by 2 1/4 lengths. It was a piece of cake, said first-time RD rider Perret, winner of the 1990 Kentucky Derby aboard Unbridled. The instructions were easy, and she won easily.
Jonnies Bella, owned by Dan Martin and Gerald Ayers and trained by Tim Hamm, won for the third time in six starts and boosted her earnings $$112,115. Earlier, Joanies Bella set a track record at Hawthorne Park in her debut and won the restricted Tah Dah Stakes at River Downs by 12 1/4 lengths July 21.
Joanies Bella joined Wendover Way in 1987 as the only Ohio-breds to win the race, covering the six furlongs in 1:12 1/5.
Caressing won last year's Bassinet and went on to capture the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies and be voted Eclipse Award champion juvenile filly.
The Bassinet kicked off the Cradle Stakes Weekend Festival. The $75,000 Governor's Buckeye Cup for older Ohio-breds is today.
Request for Parole, recent winner of the Ellis Park Juvenile, was installed the 5-2 morning-line favorite for the $200,000 Miller Genuine Draft Cradle Stakes for 2-year-olds on closing day, Monday, of the summer meet.
