Toddler left in bathtub critical

        An 11-month-old North Fairmount girl nearly drowned Monday morning after being left in a bathtub alone, Cincinnati police said.

        Juwanna Lowe was in critical condition Monday night in the intensive care unit at Children's Hospital Medical Center.

        Juwanna's mother told police she found her daughter face down and unconscious at 10:54 a.m. in the bathtub at her apartment in the 2300 block of Williamsburg Drive. Police said the woman told investigators she left the baby alone a matter of minutes.

        Police, who didn't release the mother's name, said they were investigating the incidentand charges had been filed Monday night.
       

North Avondale man faces robbery charge

               A North Avondale man was charged with aggravated robbery on Monday, two weeks after a woman was robbed of $5 at gunpoint, Cincinnati District 4 police said.

        Curtis Beasley, 32, of the 3900 block of Ardmore Avenue, also was charged with drug abuse and preparing for drug distribution. Police said Mr. Beasley was hiding in a closet in his apartment when the owner consented to a search. Police say they confiscated crack cocaine from the residence.
       

UC medical school adds Web application

               The University of Cincinnati's College of Medicine has developed an online application to get around problems in a national system.

        Applicants for the 2002 entering class must register on UC's Web site www.onlineapp.med.uc.edu even if they have applied on the site run by the American Medical College Application Service.

        They must complete the UC application if indicated after online registration. There is no fee for this application.

        UC urged early-decision applicants to do this by Wednesday.

Symposium to discuss "War and Media'

               “War and Media: Rhetoric, Romance and Reality,” will be the 11th annual Westheimer Peace Symposium on Oct. 17 at Wilmington College in Wilmington, Ohio.

        Speakers will examine such topics as media in popular culture, warrior politics, covering international human rights, reviving nuclear power, media use of children, defense contractors and expanded war coverage.

        Speakers include Atlantic Monthly correspondent Robert Kaplan, Harvard University scholar Susan Moeller, reporter and journalism professor Karl Grossman (State University of New York/Old Westbury) and ABC senior correspondent Bettina Gregory.

Cable flaw closes roller coaster

               SANDUSKY, Ohio — Labor Day visitors to Cedar Point amusement park missed out on its biggest roller coaster, which was closed Sunday after a cable separated during a test run, stranding 30 employees in cars 275 feet off the ground.

        Park spokesman Bryan Edwards said Monday that the train stopped while climbing the Millennium Force's 310-foot first hill.

        It took about an hour to get everyone off the ride. They were brought down in a six-person steel cart that runs parallel to the tracks and is usually used for maintenance
       

Ohio ranks poorly in child lead poisoning

               CLEVELAND — Ohio ranked second worst among 19 states in the first attempt by the Centers for Disease Control to compare lead-poisoning rates among children.

        Cuyahoga County had the highest percentage among all the counties surveyed in Ohio and about 85 percent of its cases were children in Cleveland, the Plain Dealer reported Sunday.
