Ky. doctor accused of over-prescribing Oxy
The Associated Press
HARLAN, Ky. A second Harlan County doctor has been accused of over-prescribing OxyContin.
Dr. Farooq Ghory, a general practitioner, resigned two weeks ago from the Daniel Boone Clinic, according to hospital spokesman Mark Bell.
In a complaint, Evarts resident Darrell Gene Bolin accuses Dr. Ghory of over-prescribing the painkiller which has been blamed for a recent rash of overdose deaths in eastern Kentucky. The complaint also accuses Dr. Ghory of making sexual advances toward Mr. Bolin.
The complaint was filed Wednesday in Harlan Circuit Court. It also names Appalachian Regional Healthcare and its representative, Frank McCracken Jr. Appalachian Healthcare operates the clinic.
The complaint said Mr. Bolin went to Dr. Ghory for treatment of back pain between November 1999 and September 2000. It said during that time, Dr. Ghory intentionally over-prescribed OxyContin pills, made sexual advances toward him and failed to protect Mr. Bolin from bodily harm.
Mr. Bolin is suing for damages and wants a jury trial.
Earlier this year, Harlan physician Ali Sawaf was indicted for over-prescribing the drug. Dr. Sawaf, also a former employee of the Boone clinic, is in the Harlan County Detention Center.
A pretrial conference for Dr. Sawaf is scheduled for Nov. 16, and his jury trial is scheduled to begin Dec. 3.
