Warren County
History comes alive on Web site
The past of Butler, Warren and other Southwest Ohio counties is alive virtually.
It comes not through a time machine but the Ohio Historical Society's Web site, www.ohiohistory.org.
Last month the society received the Society of American Archivists 2001 Distinguished Service Award for its efforts to put so many things on-line, including old photographs and entire exhibits.
More than 3 million people a year are looking at the Web site, accessing more than 200,000 documents.
The Web site features contributions from Butler County, including the Soldiers, Sailors and Pioneer Monument in Hamilton (shot in 1951); the Millville home of Samuel C. Landis, a legislator, farmer and educator (1940s); the Young African-American Feeding Program of the Works Progress Administration (1936); and the Butler County Learning School (1930).
Warren County's photos include the Golden Lamb Inn and a Miami Valley view around Fort Ancient. Both were shot in the 1940s.
Another popular exhibit is Ohio battle flags, showing the colors of every regiment in the Buckeye state. (See www.ohiohistory.org/battleflags).
If you live in Hamilton County, you might be interested in the regiments with soldiers from Cincinnati and Hamilton County.
