The Associated Press
MURRAY, Ky. The Murray State University Board of Regents voted 10-1 to hire King Alexander to succeed his father, Kern Alexander, as president of the university.
Regents called King Alexander at his home in Illinois and he accepted the post on Friday after the vote.
Terry Strieter, the faculty representative on the board, was the lone dissenting vote.
Mr. Alexander will be in Murray this morning for a news conference.
Mr. Alexander, 37, director of the higher education program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, is a widower. His wife Elizabeth, 34, died Jan. 20 of breast cancer.
He has a master's degree from the Oxford University and a bachelor's degree from St. Lawrence University in New York.
The other finalists who interviewed this week were G. Daniel Howard, 51, vice president for university advancement and administration at the University of North Alabama, and Donald Bates, dean of school of management at California State University, Dominguez Hills.
The university considered more than 125 nominations and applications with the help of Dallas-based search firm Korn/Ferry Inc.
