High school highlights


Ursuline tennis upsets No. 1 CHCA

        The Ursuline girls tennis team pulled off another major upset by defeating Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy, ranked No.1 in the Enquirer's coaches poll, 3-2 Saturday.

        Coming off a 3-2 victory over No.2 Sycamore on Wednesday, the No.3-ranked Lions are making a bid to take over the poll's top spot.

        “To beat CHCA and Syc amore during the same week is great for us.” said Ursuline coach Karen Kelley. “This team is a bunch of hard workers.”

        Junior Catherine Rentschler defeated CHCA senior Jen Dektas 6-3, 6-0 for Ursuline's only singles victory Saturday.

        The Lions' first doubles team of Meredith Legin and Laura Terkasky won in straight sets, as did the sec ond doubles team of Christine Reeve and Jenna Davis, who fell behind 4-1 in the first set.

        “Both doubles teams played great,” Kelley said. “The second doubles team started slow again but turned it on to win.”

Boys cross country

               LaSalle won the first event of the Great American Races series, at San Francisco's Golden Gate Park.

        Senior Allen Bader had the Lancers' highest individual finish, placing second in 15:35. Senior Garrett Grogan (8th), junior Jason Beck (10th), Eric Mayhaus (13th) and Kyle Dragan (16th) rounded out LaSalle's scoring runners.

Girls soccer

        Wyoming took an early lead on goals by Jenny Westerndorf and Erica Schmitt, then held on for a 2-1 victory over Ross. It was the Rams' first loss of the season.

        • Mercy 1, Turpin 1 — Mercy struck first on a goal by Becky Rutherford midway through the second half. Rutherford's goal came on a head-ball off a chip shot from the corner by Angie Scarlato.

        Turpin tied the score with seven minutes to play on a goal by Krista Newkirk from Kailey Corkin's crossing pass.

Boys soccer

        Behind goals from Clint Allen and Jeff Merhar, Wyoming overcame a one-goal halftime deficit to beat Seven Hills 3-2.         ; Allen scored from the top of the penalty box off a free kick from Ryan Coffey. Merhar scored from 3 yards out with 20 minutes left.
