New dancers give Cincinnati Ballet international air

Cincinnati Ballet continues to develop an international roster of dancers.

The newest principal hired is Russian Nikita Shcheglov from St. Petersburg, who danced leading roles with the Kirov Ballet, including James in La Sylphide and Golden Slave in Scheherazade.

His wife, Veronika Ivanova, also of St. Petersburg, joins as a soloist. Ni Wei of Guangzhon, China, is a new corps de ballet member.

Familiar faces not in the lineup this season include Chandra Moss, a member of the corps de ballet who danced many solo roles in her six years with the company.

Ms. Moss, 27, has moved to New York to be with husband George Thorne as he begins his postdoctoral work in molecular and cellular physiology. Audiences will miss her expansive, milky interpretations so vivid in modern works, including last season's Stanton Welch ballet Fingerprints.

Young students in the company's CincyDance program will miss her enthusiastic and caring teaching. She was coordinator/teacher of the inner-city program for five years, and as a young black woman, became something of a role model for many of her students.

“I loved being a part of their lives. Kids would call me at home and say "You want to go to the movies?' and I'd go. I'll miss them,” Ms. Moss says.

Also gone is principal Meridith Benson, who danced a beautiful season last year, including one of the most perfect Swan Lake's in memory. She's out of dancing but not dance; she's teaching ballet classes for the School for Creative and Performing Arts.
