TEMPO STORIES FOR WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 2001
Gutes Essen, gute Laune!
The week of Oktoberfest-Zinzinnati, we devote our section to everything German.

Authentic German recipes include Tristate favorites
These are authentic recipes that represent some of the many popular German specialties that have become a part of Cincinnati's culinary heritage.

Turning energy into healing
Christine Celek knew she was different when she looked around the classroom and realized none of the other 6-year-olds was drawing energy fields around their stick figures.

A guide to help make your day

FOOD
Fruit crisp project simple, successful
For our German foods issue, we chose a baked apple dessert to rehab. It may not be an authentic strudel, but it is reminiscent of German fruit-filled desserts.

German brand tops sauerkraut taste test
To find the best-tasting sauerkraut, we asked four experienced German cooks — Camilla Schwab of Springfield Township, Marie Lichtenberger of Reading, Renate Schreiber of Springfield Township and Hella Rehner of White Oak — to put five common brands to the test. The women blindly tasted the uncooked sauerkraut in the Germania Society kitchen in Colerain Township.

Oktoberfest beers uphold German tradition
Germany is world famous for its beer, and deservedly so. The Oktoberfest style will be on display for the next month or so, as a classic seasonal beer. Like other lagers, it needs time in cool storage to develop character, so brewing takes place long before it's ready to serve.

Restaurant schnitzel
Schnitzel presents such a simple canvas to the creative cook that it always has inspired variations.

Rieslings should be poured at Oktoberfest
German rieslings are the Rodney Dangerfield of wines. They get no respect. Even Germans themselves — at least during Oktoberfest — emphasize beer almost to the exclusion of wines — even their own wines.

REVIEWS
3 Doors Down sounds familiar
Before 3 Doors Down took to the Riverbend stage Monday night, a Keith Richards album played over the public-address system. The music cut off, and when the band appeared, lead singer Brad Arnold was wearing a black T-shirt with the Led Zeppelin logo spelled out in silver sparkles. As Mr. Arnold sang through the night, appropriations of familiar lyrics could be heard: a phrase from a Pink Floyd song in “Kryptonite,” a little Jimi Hendrix in “Life of My Own.”

RADIO & TV
CDs capture glory days of Cincinnati radio
Before it was “The Big One,” WLW-AM was the biggest one.

HEALTH
Body & mind

Spike: A deficiency of nitric oxide may explain why patients' high blood pressure keeps spiraling out of control, according to a new California study.

SPECIAL EVENT
Scribblers to roast Borgman
Jim Borgman is drawing quite a crowd for his 25th anniversary celebration at The Enquirer.

SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT
Orchestrating a Cincinnati sound
Cincinnati is about to hear the new sound of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, courtesy of Paavo Jarvi.
