Zanardi recovering from gruesome crash

By The Cincinnati Enquirer and wire reports

BERLIN — Doctors on Monday performed a follow-up operation on Italian Alex Zanardi, 34, saying the two-time CART champion was not out of danger after losing his legs in a crash. “But it's my impression that he's getting more stable,” one said.

A dozen family members, friends, drivers and CART officials were at the Berlin Trauma Center, where Zanardi was flown after his crash Saturday in the American Memorial 500.

        NKU VOLLEYBALL:

Bethany Gastright was named Great Lakes Valley Conference player of the week. The 5-foot-11 senior outside hitter hit .416 for the week as the Norse (6-4, 1-0 GLVC) handed NAIA power Georgetown (Ky.) its first defeat of the season and beat Saint Joseph's College in three games. Gastright recorded 43 kills, five service aces, 14 digs and three blocks in the two victories. Gastright, who leads NKU with 151 kills this season, has 1,300 kills in her career and ranks No.5 in Norse history.

Two seek repeat wins in Kentucky Cup races

Turfway Park's Kentucky Cup Day of Champions races Saturday will probably have two runners seeking to become the first repeat winners in the eight-year history of the races. Da Devil, upset winner of the 1999 Grade II Kentucky Cup Classic, is expected to start in the eighth running of the $400,000 race for 3-year-olds and older horses. The Thoroughbred Corporation's Spain is probable to try for a second straight win in the $200,000 Grade III Turfway Breeders' Cup Stakes for fillies and mares. Racing secretary Rick Leigh assigned Guided Tour high weight of 119 pounds for the Classic. Entries will be taken and post positions drawn Thursday.

Also Saturday are the $150,000 Grade II KC Sprint, $100,000 Grade III KC Juvenile and $100,000 KC Juvenile Fillies. First post is noon. The Classic will be televised by ESPN2 at 5 p.m.

Lawsuit threatened over Little Brown Jug redraw

DELAWARE, Ohio — The owners of Four Starzzz Shark are considering a lawsuit to overturn the unprecedented redraw for Thursday's Little Brown Jug at Delaware County Fairgrounds. Four Starzzz Shark drew the No. 10 hole in a tougher division and will start behind the first eight horses that come to the starting gate. Earlier Saturday, Four Starzzz Shark drew post five in a relatively easy division and was made the morning-line favorite. Four Starzzz Shark won the first leg of pacing's triple crown, the Cane Pace.

WBOB (1160-AM) to carry AHL Ducks games

The Cincinnati Mighty Ducks have extended their agreement with WBOB (1160-AM) to broadcast Mighty Ducks games on radio through the 2001-2002 American Hockey League season. The agreement calls for all Ducks regular season and playoff games to be carried live and in their entirety on WBOB, home in the Tristate for ESPN radio. The broadcast package also calls for a 30-minute pre-game show, extended post-game show and internet broadcasts of Mighty Ducks games. John Cannon (play-by-play) and Greg Waddell (color analyst) will return for their second season. The Ducks open their fifth AHL season Oct.6 against Portland Pirates at 7:35 p.m. in Cincinnati Gardens.
