Four killed as cars exceed 100 mph
The Associated Press
COLUMBUS One of two vehicles racing at speeds of more than 100 mph on Interstate 71 skidded out of control, slammed into a guardrail, struck an embankment and burst into flames Monday. All four occupants were killed.
Truck drivers and motorists grabbed fire extinguishers from their vehicles and fought the fire until firefighters arrived.
The accident was in a congested area near Interstate 270 and Polaris Parkway about 4 p.m. where traffic was building because of rush hour and a Stevie Nicks concert at Polaris Amphitheater. Road crews were working on a major construction project in the area.
Police said one of the cars lost control in the southbound far left lane, skidded about 400 feet across all three lanes and into a guardrail.
The car turned over, ejecting two people into the brush of an embankment and trapping the other two underneath the car.
The second car did not stop and police were looking for it.
The victims have not been identified. Detective Mark Rice said three of the bodies were burned so badly that dental records may have to be used to identify them.
Fatal shot not likely accidental
