213 local students named Merit semifinalists

By Sue Kiesewetter
Enquirer Contributor

There are 213 Greater Cincinnati students among 16,000 named semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Corp.'s 47th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

Among them were nine seniors at Summit Country Day School, about 11 percent of the school's graduating class of 81. Cincinnati Public Schools had 18 semifinalists from three schools.

St. Xavier High School, with 27 semifinalists, had the greatest number of any Tristate high school, followed by Sycamore, with 15, and CPS' Walnut Hills, with 14.

The students represent less than 1 percent of the nation's high school seniors. The number of semifinalists in each state is proportional to its percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.

The students are eligible to compete for 8,000 Merit Scholarship awards, worth more than $32 million that will be offered next spring. The students were among 1.2 million teens enrolled in 20,000 high schools who entered the 2002 program by taking the 2000 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

About 90 percent of the semifinalists will be named finalists based on submission of SAT scores and a detailed scholarship application that each student and a school official jointly submit. It includes an essay by the student, information about participation and leadership in school, community activities, and a recommendation from the principal.

        The semifinalists:
