Expert: Restore UK building
The Associated Press
LEXINGTON A nationally renowned expert in the preservation of historic buildings said Monday that he believes the University of Kentucky's fire-ravaged administration building has plenty of potential.
It's a wonderful building, and it deserves to be restored, architect Charles Phillips of Winston-Salem, N.C., told a committee formed by President Lee Todd to advise the university on restoration of the 1880s-era campus landmark.
Care should be taken in the restoration process to preserve the original identity of the building while avoiding architectural tension, Mr. Phillips said.
I would put the clock tower back to its full height instantly, he said.
Mr. Phillips also recommended restoring the original museum on the first floor, as well as a classroom-lecture hall that would be made to look like an 1880s-era classroom but contain high-tech equipment.
