HAMILTON — Child psychologists, state officials and community members will meet at the second annual Safe Kids, Strong Families Conference beginning today.

Register at the door or call the Human Services Council of Butler County at 759-7211. Nonprofessionals: $20 per day, $50 for entire conference. Professionals: $50 per day, $120 for entire conference. Financial assistance is available.    When: Today through Saturday.     Where: Harry T. Wilks Conference Center and Parrish Auditorium on the Hamilton campus of Miami University.

        The three-day meeting at the Harry T. Wilks Conference Center on Miami University's Hamilton campus will feature panels on building strong families. Discussions are planned on ways to address the terrorist attacks on America with children.

        The conference is sponsored by the Human Services Council of Butler County and community businesses. Topics include attention and behavioral disorders, drug and alcohol abuse, shaken baby syndrome and sexual abuse.

        On Saturday, a panel including a representative from U.S. Rep. John Boehner's office, County Commissioner Michael Fox and State Rep. Shawn Webster will lead discussions on education and the effect on children of the terrorist attacks.

        Child specialists Thomas Armstrong, Sal Severe, Sybil Wolin and Steven J. Wolin will also speak.

        Conference organizer Kattie Weber said the conference brings in a lot of professionals, but she would like to see more parents and community members participate.

        Safe Kids, Strong Families began last year as Mr. Fox saw a need for educating familieson creating safe and supportive environments.
