NEWPORT Shadowbox Cabaret opens to a sold-out house a promising sign f or one of two businesses opening today at Newport on the Levee, the $200 million entertainment complex on the river.
Tuesday, the cast and crew were putting finishing touches on the business, which originated in Columbus.
It's been a struggle, but the show is in great shape, the kitchen is working, and we'll be ready for the opener, said Shadowbox publicity director Katy Psenicka.
Nearby, Mitchell's Fish Market restaurant opens at 11:30 a.m. today for lunch, said general manager Steve Singleton.
Officials of Steiner and Associates, the Columbus developer of Newport on the Levee, had hoped for a grand opening of several entertainment and food venues this week, including the 20-screen AMC multiplex theater.
But AMC will not be ready to open until Oct. 12.
Shadowbox Cabaret, which has been successful at Steiner's Easton Town Center in Columbus, is a combination of singing, dancing, one-act plays, comedy and rock 'n' roll. And it serves food.
The Firstar IMAX Theater will open today, too, with the first showing of Into the Deep at 10 a.m.
Newport on the Levee, which includes the Newport Aquarium and the Firstar3D Imax theater, will grow as more shops and restaurants open over the next six months. Barnes & Noble Booksellers is expected to open in early November, as will specialty shops such as American Eagle Outfitters and Pacific Beachwear.
